Resumo: This study investigates the practices of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) within the Graduation Program in Veterinary Medicine at the Federal University of Santa Maria (PPGMV/UFSM). The primary focus of the research is academic writing, which is examined within the perspective of Academic Literacies (LEA; STREET, 1998) and Academic Writing Discourses (IVANIČ, 2004). The research adopts a qualitative, interpretivist, and textographic approach, incorporating document analysis, surveys, participant observations, and interviews. The findings identify three main EAP practices within PPGMV/UFSM: 1) the offering of courses which engage with EAP, 2) participation in international academic mobility programs, and 3) a culture of publishing in English. The EAP-focused courses at PPGMV/UFSM provide master and doctoral students with opportunities for peer reviewing and writing scientific papers in English, engaging in oral presentations, and participating as viewers in academic seminars, among other activities. Recurrent participation in international academic mobility programs across various academic levels (undergraduate, master, doctoral, teaching/research) has proven essential for EAP practices at PPGMV/UFSM, as it contributes to the linguistic improvement of participants in English and provides exposure to diverse techniques and methodologies. The PPGMV/UFSM demonstrates a strong inclination towards publishing scientific research in English, emphasizing concise language and the publication of research results in the format of scientific papers. Despite these EAP initiatives, the results indicate challenges for students, particularly less experienced ones, in effectively engaging in academic authorship practices within their community of practice. As contributions to the field of Applied Linguistics, additional actions are suggested to complement the existing EAP practices within this community, such as employing guided reading approaches to the teaching of writing, based on critical literacies theories (KALANTZIS et al., 2016), and the training of readers as discourse analysts (MOTTA-ROTH, 2009), as well as providing more opportunities throughout the courses for students to practice writing in English, as recommended by the Academic Literacies Pedagogy (GIMENEZ; THOMAS, 2015) and the Academic Writing Cycle (MOTTA-ROTH, 2009).

A ênfase principal da pesquisa é na escrita acadêmica, que é considerada pelo ponto de vista dos Letramentos Acadêmicos (LEA; STREET, 1998) e dos Discursos de Escrita Acadêmica (IVANIČ, 2004). A pesquisa adotou uma abordagem qualitativa, interpretativista e textográfica, envolvendo análises documentais, aplicação de questionários, observações-participante e realização de entrevistas. Os resultados apontam que são três as principais práticas de EAP no PPGMV/UFSM, a saber, 1) a oferta de disciplinas que mobilizam o EAP, 2) a participação em programas de mobilidade acadêmica internacional e 3) a cultura de publicações em inglês. As disciplinas do PPGMV/UFSM que mobilizam o EAP oferecem aos mestrandos e doutorandos oportunidades para a realização de revisões por pares e de produção escrita de artigos científicos em inglês, de apresentações orais e a participação como ouvintes em seminários acadêmicos, entre outros. A participação recorrente em programas de mobilidade acadêmica internacional nos diferentes níveis acadêmicos (graduação, mestrado, doutorado, docência/pesquisa) demonstrou-se essencial para as práticas de EAP no PPGMV/UFSM, por contribuir com o aprimoramento linguístico em inglês dos participantes, além de oportunizar o contato com técnicas e metodologias diferenciadas. O PPGMV/UFSM revela uma forte inclinação para a publicação científica em língua inglesa, além de priorizar o uso de linguagem sucinta e a publicação de resultados de pesquisa no formato de artigos científicos. Apesar de todas essas ações de EAP no PPGMV/UFSM, os resultados apontaram dificuldades por parte dos alunos, principalmente os menos experientes, de participar efetivamente das práticas de autoria acadêmica em sua comunidade de prática.
