Introduction: the accident with biological material has great relevance in the field of occupational health. All health professionals are at biological risk, but the nursing team is more subject to accidents with biological material, once their activities are performed in direct care for the patient, hence leading to a possible contact with fluids and secretions capable of transmitting contagious diseases. Aim: to study work accidents with biological material in the city of Uberaba-MG from 2013 to 2017, and to assess the view of nurses working in the adult emergency room at the Clinic Hospital of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro and in the University Hospital Emergency Room Mário Palmério of the University of Uberaba, in relation to the work accident with biological material. Methodology: this is a quantitative-qualitative study. The results obtained in the qualitative phase were evaluated based on the content analysis method and those obtained in the quantitative phase were assessed through an electronic spreadsheet using graphs and diagrams. Results: the first article confirmed how expressive is the number of cases of occupational accidents with biological material to nursing professionals. The second article describes through nurses' statements the comprehension of these professionals regarding these injuries. Conclusion: the prevention of accidents at work with biological material does not depend only on standardization and mandatory registration; there needs to be interaction between legislators, employers and workers. All professionals must be united in order to minimize damage from these injuries. It is believed that professional training is the primary means of preventing work accidents with biological material. Notwithstanding that, it is necessary to create innovative ways to convince professionals about the importance of using Personal Protective Equipment and to involve the entire team in order to help each other in protecting their health in the working environment.
