Resumo: This work addresses a new approach of analyzing European immigration to Brazil, emphasizing the study of the pathological frame of the immigration groups immediately after their arrival in the tropical region, as well as the social representations recreated by the newcomers regarding the causes of diseases and therapeutic solutions found for their cure. Thus, its main focus is the investigation of the initial settling phase of the immigrants in Santa Leopoldina (ES) an agricultural frontier region, then -1856 through 1900. This study was based on the analysis of the infirmary records related to the colonial settlement period, medical files reporting the local epidemiological cases, letters and journals written by the immigrants as well as official reports and foreign traveler accounts. Thus, an aspect of the relation between the immigrant and the natural world has been elucidated, highlighting the role played by the former, who, as a subject facing new environmental injunctions, was able to reconstruct a new universe of representations.

Para tanto, tem como foco primordial a investigação da fase inicial de estabelecimento dos imigrantes em Santa Leopoldina (ES) na época uma região de fronteira agrícola - entre os anos de 1856 e 1900. Tal estudo foi construído a partir da análise dos registros de enfermaria referentes ao empreendimento colonial, correspondências médicas que reportavam a situação epidemiológica da localidade, epístolas e memórias de imigrantes, além de relatórios oficiais e relatos de viajantes estrangeiros.
