Morfologia, consequências do ataque de Lampetis nigerrima (Kerremans, 1897) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) e poda de correção em clone de eucalipto

Two works were developed; the first objective was to find out important characters to be used in the identification of Lampetis nigerrima (Kerremans, 1897). Field activities were carried out in a commercial eucalypt plantation of cloned hybrid (Eucalyptus grandis vs E. urophylla), in the Grão Mogol County, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Lab works were developed at the Federal University of Viçosa and Federal University of Paraná. The second work deals to the effect of tree damage by L. nigerrima and to the correction pruning on the tree development under field conditions. In the last case, a randomized experimental 4-block design was used; each experimental unity had 100 trees randomly marked. Treatments were Trees damaged by beetles, but receiving a correction pruning 5 months latter ; Damaged, but not pruned trees and Trees with no damage and no pruning (=Control). Full height and breast diameter and stem quality were evaluated 29 months after insect outbreak and two years after tree pruning. As results, we found adult of L. nigerrima as an elongated beetle with strongly and chitinized body. Head hypognathous, wider than long, not surpassing the largest width of the pronotun. Elytra dark-green, apical margin 2-lobed, containing white bristles inserted in circular depressions as strong evidence for specie identification. All legs with evident blue tarsi. Abdomen black with violet shinning. First to the fifth sternites with a medium keel, very salient in the first. Subsequent margin of the seventh abdominal sternites is round in females, but a sharp projection is evident in the center of the subsequent margin of the seventh in males. After 29 months since the insect outbreak, control trees got higher wood production than damaged trees. Correction pruning improved the stem quality and the wood production in relation to that observed on damaged/not pruned trees. It is concluded that L. nigerrima beetle is capable to cause significant losses to the wood production in which control is merited and it may be considered one more and very important forest pest in the Brazilian eucalypt plantations.
