The expansion of fruit culture in the Submedio São Francisco region has allowed the creation of work places for female labor. However, the participation of women in this work sector is characterized by unequal and excluding conditions. As stated by Noronha (1985, p. 87), rural women working in irrigated fruit culture areas are considered economically active; however, despite performing the same activities performed by men, their salary is almost always inferior. Rural female workers also face longer working hours since men, in general, do not share housework. According to Bruschini (1990), unequal male participation in housework forces women to undergo an exhaustive work load both at home and outside the house. The insertion of rural female workers as wage earners is generally via seasonal activities, restricted to some stages of the productive cycle, thus not constituting a permanent occupation, most of the times. Faced with this scenario, this work aimed to investigate the changes in the social and family relations resulting from the insertion of women in fruit culture, particularly vine-growing, at the Nucleus 04 of the Senador Nilo Coelho Irrigation Project in Petrolina-PE, and to verify whether such participation provided them and their families a greater social inclusion. Aiming to find answers to these questions, a field research was carried out by applying sample questionnaires, where women who work in irrigated fruit culture, more specifically, grape picking, as well as male workers and employers working in this sector were interviewed. It was concluded that seasonal work provides women a greater buying power leading to social inclusion whose benefits are also extended to their families. It was also concluded that the type of inclusion provided by seasonal work is almost always precarious and unstable.
