The Brazilian production of sugar and alcohol were always relevant not only in domestic terms but also in reference to external insertion. Nowadays, Brazil is distinguished as one of the main players in the international sugar- alcohol market. Though, the recent changes in the proposals of the energetic world matrix highlighting the importance in amplifying the use of the renewable energy resources (such as the combustible alcohol) rather modified the relationships in determining the production and created a less stable ambient. Additionally in the 90- ies, the sugar-alcohol sector suffered intense deregulation that increased the potential for autonomy and productivity, but also accentuated the exposure to competition. In this context, the objective of the research is to analyze both dynamics and performance of the national sugar-alcohol industry, by taking into account all marketing, institutional and international insert aspects. The chosen methodology proposes two different approaches: firstly, an econometric approach was implemented in order to make possible an accurate determination of the relationships between price and production (direct and crossed) for sugar and alcohol. Following, a group of indicators were used to evaluate the Brazilian international competitiveness in the sugar and alcohol market. In both analyses, the results showed the sugar market to be steadier than the alcohol from which the behavior simultaneously shows higher dynamism and variability. In all indicators, the results showed Brazil to be competitive in this market, as being possible to identify the relevance of the presence or not of sectorial incentive programs in practically all analyses. Mainly at the second phase of the research, it was observed the deregulation to affect the production and price that are important to both markets, as being more effective for the alcohol.
