Resumo: In order to evaluate the use of three local anesthetic (benzocaine, clove oil and menthol) to sedation and desensitization of tadpoles and post-metamorphic animals of bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) at different stages of development one experiment was took place on the Experimental Laboratory of Federal University of Viçosa. The experiment was divided into three phases: Phase 1 - Tadpoles, in which each anesthetic was assessed by four hundred tadpoles at 15, 30, 45, 60 e 75 days of age for the time required to induction and return to sedation and anesthesia; Phase 1 - Part B, was held in order to simulate the tadpoles transport of four groups at different ages (30, 45, 60 and 75 days) under the action of the three local anesthetic; Phase 2 Youth, Juvenile and Adult, in which each anesthetic was assessed for the time required for induction and return to sedation and anesthesia of four hundred post-metamorphic animals at different class of age (5g-10g; 20g-30g; 80g-100g and 120g-160g). In the first phase, during induction and recovery the animals were evaluated every 15 minutes during a period of 180 minutes by the presence or absence of escape reflex and sense of nociception. On the second phase for each local anesthetic six to eight groups each one with 200 tadpoles were put in plastic bags measuring 50cm X 60cm with 10 liters of anesthetic solution (water + anesthetic) and oxygen. The number of animals induced to sedation characterized by the absence of movement of tadpoles even after the external stimulus (movement of the bags), and the recovery time were observed every 1 hour on the first five hours and then only after 24 hours. In the third phase, to the determination of the best anesthetic compound, the withdrawal reflex, righting reflex, respiratory frequency and sensitivity to light and deep nociception were used to evaluate central nervous system depression following bath administration on each animal in which each class of weight evaluated every 15 minutes for a period of 5 hours (induction period). After this period, the animals were transferred to anestheticfree water which was then monitored to establish the time required for animals to return the normal behavior (recovery period). In tadpoles of bullfrog menthol and benzocaine showed similar results for both sedation and anesthesia. In all groups of age the most effective anesthetic agents for sedation of bullfrog tadpoles for 24 hours were benzocaine and menthol. Benzocaine, menthol and clove oil are effective agents in the induction of tadpoles and post-metamorphic frog of bullfrogs to sedation and anesthesia. In Phase 1 - Tadpole I, clove oil showed the best results on the concentration used and the time of induction, maintenance and return for sedation and anesthesia of bullfrog tadpoles, while menthol and benzocaine showed similar results. During the simulation transport of pre-metamorphic animals and post-metamorphic animals (5g to 160g) anesthesia, menthol and benzocaine showed the best results. Since menthol and benzocaine are equivalent, the choice between one or the other is at the discretion of the operator, one should choose the most cost-effective.
