Tradição e modernidade no processo sucessório entre produtores de leite em dois municípios rurais de Minas Gerais

This research aimed to identify the factors influencing the succession process in family units of milk production, by contrasting factors related to modernity, such as technology, property management and associative practices, with factors related to tradition, such as minorato, preference for having men as successors and the low education level of these men. The study considered five hypotheses: 1. the level of technology would affect the presence of a successor in milk production units; 2. the size of properties would affect the presence of a successor in family milk production units; 3. access to credit would affect the succession process of milk producers; 4. proximity to urban areas would affect the presence or absence of successors of milk production family units; and, finally, 5. the level of education of producers affects the succession process. The research was conducted through a survey with semi-structured interviews, consisting of multple-choice and written questions. Eighty-three questionnaires were applied: 52 in Silveirânia and 31 in Coronel Xavier Chaves, in Minas Gerais. After the application of the questionnaires, the data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software system. Descriptive and frequency analyses were carried out, as well as regression, chi-square and t tests. The data obtained denied the hypothesis that the present level of technology in a production unit is a factor that influences in the presence of successors in milk production units and corroborated the other four hypotheses. This research leads to the conclusion that the influence of values related to tradition and modernity on the behavior and practices of farmers greatly depend on the type of city in which production units are located. In Silveirânia, a town that is far from urban centers, traditional values and practices prevailed in the succession process, while in Coronel Xavier Chaves, which is closer to a urban center, the influence of values and practices of modernity prevailed. Therefore, it must be highlighted that the prevalence of modern or traditional values in succession processes in milk production units depends on the type of city where the property is located.
