The theme of the struggle for land and agrarian reform is latent these days, due to the absence of a consistent public policy aiming at the performance a massive agrarian reform and supply the existing demand for land. Within this context the rural and urban workers inserted in various social movements seek, through land occupations that violate the social function or empty lands that supposedly were acquired illegally, the possibility to purchase an area of land to live, work and produce on it. Is in favor of this pressure that the Government has created thousands of rural settlement projects all around Brazil. Based on this context said paper aims at analyzing how the process of specialization of the land struggle led by several social movements influenced the increase in the number of rural settlements in Minas Gerais (state of Brazil), more specifically the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra denominated as MST) that through its performance, reached the region of Zona da Mata Mineira in 2005, occupying symbolically a farm unproductive that was already expropriated by the Federal Government since the year 2004 in the city of Visconde do Rio Branco culminated with the creation of the first rural settlement project of land reform called Olga Benário and has been conducting new actions of land occupations in middle region. As a result of the research, it could be seen that the occupation of land is still the main mechanism of access to land through government projects of Agrarian Reform Settlement (P.As). However, not all land occupation turns into a settlement project or into a camp. The research showed that workers and mediators involved in this process have different objectives and ideals. In dealing with settling note that there is no sense of community because families are at different stages in relation to the improvement of their living conditions. Intended to provide information to better serve the dynamics of the struggle for land in the Zona da Mata Mineira , as well as the role of the various mediators involved and so that families relate to each other and their strategies for survival, besides getting the paper in study the efficiency of this public policy in favor of improving the lives of these families through the emancipation of the settlement that could contribute to rural and regional development.
