Resumo: The objective of this research was to describe technological properties of the wood of a ten years old clone of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. and of two clones of Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake of six and eight years of age. The effect of clone and radial position within the tree on wood properties was evaluated. The trees belonged to the Votorantim Metais Zinco S/A, a steel mill located in the Northwest portion of the State of Minas Gerais, near the city of Vazante. The trees grew in association with cattle and grain, in a 10 x 4 meter spacing and had their dendrometric variables described. Average log size was larger in E. camaldulensis, as was its volume. Heartwood percentage was also larger in these trees. On the other hand, the two clones of E. urophylla showed smaller taper and the yield in the sawmill was consequently better. For wood characterization, samples taken from logs were submitted to the following essays: determination of specific gravity (dry weight and green volume and air-dry weight and volume); linear and volumetric shrinkage and modulus of rupture and of elasticity in static bending. Some anatomical data (fiber and vessel dimensions) were also determined. Six trees of each clone were used for physical and mechanical testing; four were felled for anatomical description. When applied to the results, the Student s t test for independent samples showed that clones and position within the radius of the tree significantly influenced most of the properties measured. In general, specific gravity increased from pith to bark, a well as length and wall thickness of the fibers, diameter of the vessels and strength in bending and stiffness. Vessel frequency decreased from pith to bark. The width of the fibers and the diameter of their lumen, the linear and volumetric shrinkage and the T/R ratio did not show a clear pattern of variation in the radial direction. The clone of Eucalyptus urophylla of eight years of age showed larger values for most of the properties, with the exception of fiber width, lumen diameter and T/R ratio. The values so obtained showed that the wood of these clones have no marked differences from that produced in conventional plantations.
