Resumo: | Charcoal is an excellent raw material for metallurgy, due to its value as fuel and thermoreductor, high grade of purity, low cost of production and it is a renewable product. Wood quality is a factor of crucial importance when the objective is the production of a high yield, low cost and high quality charcoal. The objective of this work was to evaluate the correlation between the physical and chemical properties of wood and yield and quality of the charcoal from five clones of eucalypt, comprised by one clone of Eucalytptus grandis and four hybrids of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla. The clones were collected in commercial plantations in a 3.0 x 3.3 m spacing, 3 years old, in three different sites in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil - Santa Bárbara, Guanhães and Ipaba - searching to evaluate the influence of different regions on the properties of the wood and the quality of the charcoal. The study of the chemical composition and the basic density of the wood were efficient to foretell the clones with the greatest potentials for the production of energy, and significant correlations were found between the physical and chemical properties of the wood and the properties of the charcoal and the gravimetric yields. Analyzing the properties of the gravimetric properties, it was observed that in the region of Santa Bárbara, the wood of the clones 1213, 1215 and 1274 showed the best conditions for the production of charcoal, having the greatest yields in charcoal and the best properties for metallurgy use, while in the region of Guanhães the wood of the clones 57, 1213 and 1274 showed the best conditions for the production of charcoal, having the greatest yields in charcoal and the best properties for metallurgy use, while in the region of Guanhães the wood of the clones 57, 1213 and 1274 showed the best conditions for the production of the charcoal and, in the Ipaba, charcoal production could be observed for the wood of the clones 1046, 1215 and 1274. In general, the clones 1215 and 1274, hybrids of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, showed the best potential for charcoal production, with good yields, ideal properties for metallurgy use and the smallest influence of the environment in the expression of their characteristics. |
