This work aimed to identify the potential of commercializing the commodity charcoal in the stock market, especially in the Brazilian Commodity Stocks (BBM), and specifically, at the Operational Regional Center in Belo Horizonte, as well as to study trade and spatial relations between this charcoal market and pig iron - producing metallurgy in the state of Minas Gerais. The methodology applied was an adaptation of that of Pennings and Leuthold, through which the viability of using a future contract for specific commodities was analyzed. Thus, some variables approached in the aforementioned methodology were used to evaluate the physical stock market for charcoal in Minas Gerais, using data obtained from two major sources. The first source was constituted by metallurgy enterprises utilizing charcoal in Minas Gerais whose data were collected by means of questionnaires and personal interviews, which allowed understanding the charcoal peculiarities of pig iron -producing metallurgies. The second source was constituted by data obtained from specialized magazines, technical and scientific articles, newspapers, pertinent legislation and statistical information. A total of 26 questionnaires was sent to the companies presenting the highest nominal capacities of pig iron production since the higher the pig iron production the higher the charcoal consumption. Out of the total questionnaires sent out, 16 were returned. The variables analyzed were perishability and storage capacity, homogeneity and mensuration capacity, price volatility, size of physical market, and number and propension of actors to negotiate the stocks. The research results indicate that 88% of the pig iron producing metallurgies in the state of Minas Gerais who answered the questionnaire depended on charcoal supply market and three quarters of them showed interest in utilizing commodity stocks. An average of 56% of the charcoal originated from the market was used, from which five million meters were acquired in 2005. Charcoal prices in the state may be considered significantly volatile, with this product being able to be stored and easily standardized. In view of the observations made, it was concluded that commercialization of the commodity charcoal in the stock market is highly viable.
