Resumo: The aim of this work was to estimate the adequate size and shape of experimental plots for the evaluation of relevant phenotipics desciptors for the characterization of banana s genotypes. The experiment consisted of a trial of uniformity conducted in Guanambi, BA, with Cultivar tropical (YB42-21), tetraploid hybrid AABB, planted with spacing of 3 m x 2 m, forming 11 rows of 52 plants each. The 9 central rows with 40 plants per row were considered useful, totalling 360 plants and area of 2,160 m². The vegetative characteres, height of the plant, perimeter of pseudostem, number of emitted suckers and number of live leaves during flowering and harvest were evaluated. Also, the characters of yield, weight of bunch and hands, number of hands and fruits, weight of second hand, weight, length and diameter of the fruit were evaluated in two cycles of production. In the evaluations, each plant was considered as a basic unit (ub), area of 6m², thus totaling, 360 ub, whose adjacent areas were combined in order to form 23 plots of pre-established sizes with rectangular formats and in rows. The data were submitted to the analysis of variance in hierarchic model simulating an experiment in subdivided plots. The size of the plot was estimated by the methods of maximum curvature, modified maximum curvature, comparison of variances and Hatheway s, and the shape of the plot was evaluated by the method of relative information. The heterogeneity rating of the soil and the detectable difference among means of treatment were also determined. The variability increased between the cycles, thus interfering in the estimates of the size of the plot. The size of the plot varied according to the methods used, the evaluated variable and the cycle of production. In the estimates of the size of the plot for the cycles of mother-plant and sucker, respectively, values of 5 a 9 ub (30 a 54 m²) and 9 (54 m²) were found for the method of maximum curvature, 1 a 5 ub (6 a 30 m²) and 1 a 7 ub (6 a 42 m²) for the method of modified maximum curvature, 5 and 15 ub (30 and 90 m²) and 5, 15 and 45 ub (30, 90 and 270 m²) for the method of the comparison of variances. The method of modified maximum curvature showed more adequate estimates when compared to the other methods. Through the Hatheway s method various sizes of the plot were estimated, many of them considered applicable ones. This allows the researcher to harmonize the arrangement of the factors that interfere in the experimental planning. In the majority of the cases, the small plots, displayed in rows, supplied greater relative information when compared to the rectangular ones. The yielding characteristics showed more concordant values and less oscillation in the adequate size of the plot in relation to the vegetative characteristics for the evaluated cycles and methods of determination of the size of the plot. Based on the estimates of the size of the plot through the method of modified maximum curvature, together with the detectable difference between the means of treatments (d) for the characteristic and cycle of bigger variability, the results suggest that plots with six basic unit (36 m²) are appropriate to evaluate with accuracy and precision all the considered phenotipics desciptors in the banana s genotypes.
