Resumo: This work aims to contribute to the improvement of chemistry teaching in high school, verifying the extent to which the reading of texts extracted from newspapers can contribute to the motivation of learning chemistry, and if this encourages the habit of reading and improves the understanding of chemical concepts. It is important to note that new pedagogical strategies should be developed to be applied in the classroom as a way to streamline the work of the teacher. Among them, the use of newspaper stands out for its low cost, easy access and always updated. The survey was applied in second grade classes of a public high school located in the municipality of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. The application of this teaching resource has been through two reading workshops on inorganic functions. The workshops were carried out with previously selected texts of newspapers of wide circulation and credibility. The selected topics were focused on science, technology and society (STS) and they aimed to contextualize chemical concepts. Although most students had not had a habit of reading newspapers, the survey indicated that they liked the workshops and they were motivated with this teaching strategy. Also it was found that during the workshops there was exchange of information among the students, making the environment conducive to knowledge acquisition. Thus, the use of texts from selected newspapers in the classroom proved to be a useful tool to improve the teaching of chemistry. Related to this research, it was developed a product, which is a didactic sequence that shows the use of newspapers texts as a tool to assist teachers in teaching Chemistry.

É importante ressaltar que sejam desenvolvidas novas estratégias pedagógicas para serem aplicadas em sala de aula como forma de dinamizar o trabalho do professor, mas o uso do jornal se justifica por ser de baixo custo, fácil acesso e um material atualizado. A pesquisa foi aplicada em turmas de 2ª série do Ensino Médio, de uma escola pública, situada no município de Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. A aplicação deste recurso didático deu-se por intermédio de duas oficinas de leitura e serviu de apoio ao ensino de funções inorgânicas. As oficinas de leitura foram realizadas com textos previamente selecionados de jornais de grande circulação e credibilidade. Os temas tinham foco no movimento da Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS) e na contextualização de conteúdos químicos. Embora a maioria dos alunos não tinham o hábito de ler jornal, os resultados desta pesquisa indicaram que os sujeitos da pesquisa gostaram das oficinas de leitura e se mostraram motivados com essa estratégia didática. Verificou-se que, enquanto participavam das oficinas, havia troca de informações entre os alunos, tornando o ambiente propício para aquisição de conhecimento. Enfim, o emprego de textos de jornais selecionados em sala de aula mostrou-se uma ferramenta útil para aprimorar o ensino de Química. Atrelado à pesquisa, foi desenvolvido um produto destinado aos professores do Ensino Médio.
