This paper aims to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the MADERUS methodology in measuring sustainable rural development (DRS) among family farmers participating in the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) in Foz do Iguaçu city, in Brazil. It serves as a tool to evaluate the sustainability of these agroecosystems through sustainability indicators. The MADERUS methodology allows for the assessment of family farming's DRS by measuring 33 individual indicators and ten composite indicators, providing consistent insights for decisionmaking and evaluating rural development sustainability in a multidimensional and interdisciplinary manner. This research, conducted with 30 family farmers, demonstrates the applicability of the methodology and its provision of reliable data on rural property sustainability. Findings indicate that property size does not directly influence sustainability outcomes; instead, factors such as productivity, profitability, education level, family succession, and financial controls significantly impact sustainability ratings. However, properties with higher productivity, profitability, robust financial controls, well-planned succession, and higher education achieve excellent sustainability results. The analysis highlights the diversity in land structure and underscores the importance of understanding local peculiarities to implement effective interventions in agriculture. Despite advancements, significant challenges persist on the path to total rural development sustainability, emphasizing the need for public policies and educational initiatives that prioritize areas with lower performance. This study enhances understanding of sustainability in family farming and provides valuable insights for the development of public policies and management practices aimed at promoting sustainable rural development in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.
