Resumo: The Amazonian fruit Camu-camu powder is marketed as a food supplement and, like all substances, it is fundamental to evaluate the dosages regarding its safety. For the experimental protocol, the Drosophila melanogaster larvae will be separated and divided into six groups: (1) Control and Camu-camu powder at the following concentrations: (2) 0.1 mg/mL Camu-camu (3) 0.5 mg/mL Camu-camu (4) 1 mg/mL Camu-camu (5) 5 mg/mL Camu-camu, (6) 10 mg/mL Camu-camu. We also exposed second-stage larvae to different concentrations of Camu-camu powder and, after 48h, we obtained a CL50 (lethal concentration) value of 4.799 mg/mL. It was observed that the larvae were not able to fully develop at concentrations above 5 mg/mL as evidenced by the reduction in the rate of pupation and hatching, due to toxicity evidenced by alterations in markers of oxidative stress, antioxidant defenses and behavioral analysis. Complementing this, we chose the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL (10X lower than the LC50), as it was shown to be safe in the first moment of this work, and we performed analyzes to demonstrate its protective action against the oxidative effect of iron (Fe). It was verified that the production of reactive species and lipid peroxidation were preserved by Camu-camu at the control level when the flies were exposed to Fe, together with the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-s- transferase (GST). Camucamu powder also minimized the possible mortality of flies when exposed to Fe, preserved cell viability and protected flies from developing changes in behavior and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Camu-camu powder made the Drosophila melanogaster organism resistant to oxidative insults generated by exposure to Fe, demonstrating therapeutic and preventive treatment potential, suggesting that its consumption during development, in adequate concentrations, may develop greater resistance to pro-oxidants.
