Described in 1921 by Afrânio do Amaral, the B. incularis is brown-yellowish, diurnal and semi-arboreal. It often feeds from migratory birds and its size rarely exceeds one meter. The increasing number of endangered snakes makes the captive breeding of great importance to their handling and preservation, being critical the study of their habits and behaviors for captive breeding and potential reintroduction to nature as a viable conservation strategy. The present study purpose was to record and analyze the feeding, reproductive and behavioral habits of the Bothrops insularis. The data utilized here was obtained through laboratory studies – fulfilled in the Medical Zoology Division of Vital Brazil Institute (Rio de Janeiro) – as well as through field observations and samplings during an expedition to the Queimada Grande Island. Six specimens were used; 2 females and 4 males, from which 2 young adults were born in captivity in March 2011. The growth, weight gain and reproductive behavior of these six specimens were monitored in the laboratory and then compared to the data collected from wild animals. Captive adult specimens of B. insularis accepted being fed with mice, and, regardless of which prey was offered, their behavior of striking and holding the prey until death persisted. Animals kept in captivity have snout-vent length (SVL) and weight greater than wild animals, with females being larger and heavier than males. For the observation of reproductive behavior, two couples were put together throughout the reproductive period in 2014 and for a limited period of time in 2015. The courtship behavior was observed at various times of the day and the couples were often found tangled together. Between the months of June and July, copulations were recorded in both couples, with one of them ending only after a period of 10 hours. During pregnancy, the female spent most of the time on top of the branch. Through monthly imaging (X-ray and ultrasound), it was possible to observe not only a high number of follicles, surpassing the number of litters described for B. insularis, as well as a hyperechoic region indicative of calcification of the embryos’ spine. Due to the limited time for completion of this work, it was not possible to include the parturition in the analysis. However, the monitoring of animals will continue and adjustments will be made for the conception of a viable breeding group of this critically endangered species.n/aBothrops insularis é uma espécie criticamente ameaçada de extinção e endêmica da Ilha da Queimada Grande (São Paulo). Descrita em 1921 por Afrânio do Amaral, possui coloração pardo-amarelada, hábitos diurnos, semi-arborícola condicionado por sua alimentação à base de aves migratórias e seu tamanho dificilmente ultrapassa um metro. O crescente número de espécies de serpentes ameaçadas de extinção torna a reprodução em cativeiro muito importante para seu manejo e preservação, sendo fundamental estudar seus hábitos e comportamentos para reprodução em cativeiro e possível reintrodução à natureza como estratégias de conservação. O presente estudo teve como objetivo registrar e analisar os hábitos alimentares, reprodutivos e comportamentais da Bothrops insularis, sendo realizado na Divisão de Zoologia Médica do Instituto Vital Brazil-RJ. As informações foram obtidas por meio de estudos no laboratório, bem como em coletas e observações em campo durante uma expedição à Ilha da Queimada Grande. Foram utilizados seis exemplares; 2 fêmeas e 4 machos, sendo 2 adultos nascidos em cativeiro em março de 2011. O crescimento, ganho de peso e comportamento reprodutivo desses seis exemplares foram acompanhados em laboratório e depois comparados com os dados coletados dos animais de vida livre. Exemplares adultos de B. insularis em cativeiro aceitaram bem a alimentação oferecida com camundongos, e o comportamento de desferir o bote e segurar a presa até a morte se manteve, independente da presa oferecida. Os animais mantidos em cativeiro têm comprimento rostro-cloacal (CRC) e peso maiores que os de vida livre, sendo as fêmeas maiores e mais pesadas que os machos. Para observação do comportamento reprodutivo, juntamos dois casais durante todo o período reprodutivo em 2014 e por um período restrito de tempo em 2015. O comportamento de corte foi observado em diversos horários do dia e os casais foram, muitas vezes, encontrados enrodilhados juntos. Entre os meses de junho e julho, foram registradas cópulas em ambos os casais, com uma delas finalizando só após um período de 10 horas. Durante a gestação, a fêmea passou a maior parte do tempo em cima do galho. Através de exames de imagem mensais (raio X e ultrassom) foi possível observar não só um número elevado de folículos, ultrapassando o número descrito para ninhadas de B. insularis, como também uma região hiperecogênica, indicativo de calcificação da coluna vertebral dos embriões. Devido ao tempo restrito para finalização deste trabalho, não foi possível incluir a parturição na análise.
