Resumo: This doctoral dissertation aims to analyze the representations constructed by the periodical Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil in the context of the impeachment process, here characterized as a coup, against President Dilma Rousseff in 2016, as well as the political upheavals and tensions that culminated in her removal from office. The research is situated within the historiography of the present time, seeking to understand how this foreign media outlet articulates narratives, discourses, and political meanings in the face of the brazilian institutional crisis, at a moment marked by intense ideological disputes and transformations in the international order. The central object of study consists of the discursive constructions surrounding the impeachment and its consequences, particularly regarding the relationship between the press, politics, and the State. The hypothesis guiding the study is that Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil articulates, through critical and well-grounded representations, an interpretation of the coup that questions the legitimacy of the process, exposing the role of the media and political elites in reproducing a contemporary authoritarian culture. Methodologically, the thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach bridging History, focused on its political and cultural dimensions, and the Social Sciences, drawing on discourse analysis and its theoretical foundations to examine the documentary corpus composed of Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil issues published between 2013 and 2017. This broad scope enables the decoding of the reversals and tensions that led to President Dilma Rousseff’s ousting. The analysis highlights how media discourse resemanticizes historical and political concepts, contributing to the construction of a critical memory of the period while simultaneously reactivating authoritarian patterns and power relations. The study concludes that Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil constitutes a fundamental symbolic agent in the struggle over the construction and contestation of interpretations of recent political events in Brazil. By operating as a space of critical resistance, the publication significantly contributes to questioning official narratives and promoting a reassessment of democratic processes and the 2016 coup. In doing so, the research reveals the complex articulations among media, politics, and culture in a context marked by institutional crises and challenges to democracy.
