Resumo: The main purpose of the wheelchair is to promote and increase efficiency, safety and independence during mobility activities for users. However, to get around in situations such as: high speed; ups and downs; uneven terrain; and stairs are situations of high physical demand for the user, which exposes him to the risk of injuries to the upper limbs, which can lead to an even greater mobility limitation than the initial situation in which he found himself. Therefore, changes in wheelchair design may be necessary ergonomic features that allow users to move comfortably and effectively with their wheelchairs. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to investigate how different designs of manual wheelchairs influence the kinetic, biomechanical, physiological and perceptual aspects of mobility in different trajectory situations. Three cross-sectional and exploratory studies were carried out, the first refers to analyzing different wheelchair design and the influence on the participants' muscle activity (n= 11) in different trajectory situations, the second study refers to the analysis of metabolic expenditures (VO2) and perceived exertion, comparing different designs and trajectories (n=15). The third study refers to the use of the Wheelchair Skils Test (WST) protocol and the use of the SmartWheel ® system (n=22). The results showed that the design of the wheelchair is a factor that influences the biomechanical and metabolic performance, that is, a determining aspect for the use of devices in a more efficient, effective and safe way. Regarding the characteristics of the movement during manual propulsion of wheelchairs, acceleration both with the hands on the propeller rim and without touching, impulsion time, speed and force peaks show to be predictors of the performance of the WST. Therefore, the present study contributes information to the scientific literature, as well as demonstrates new paths for future investigations regarding important aspects of wheelchair design.
