Resumo: The external evaluation is the expression of an effective and efficient administrative and pedagogical management and represents an indispensable tool for the school to know itself and plan its development focusing on an increasing educational quality. This research determined the factors that influenced the growth and decline of the school in study which is situated in the state of Paraná, Brazil, and its students on the “Prova Brasil” and IDEB between the years 2007 and 2011. To achieve that, the qualitative approach was adopted in a case study type of research, using bibliographical research and semi structured interviews as instruments of data collection from the following subjects: the school´s principal and pedagogical coordinator. The collected data was treated through the technique of content analysis, aiming to reach the specific research objectives. The results showed that factors such as the principal and teacher turnover, among others, are related to the low scores on the IDEB and “Prova Brasil”. The score growth on the IDEB and “Prova Brasil” showed relationship with the return of the former principal. At the end of this research some conclusions are presented regarding the causes of the decline and growth of the school’s performance.

A presente pesquisa determinou os fatores que influenciaram o crescimento e o retrocesso do desempenho da escola em estudo, que é situada no estado do Paraná, Brasil, e de seus alunos na Prova Brasil e no IDEB entre os anos de 2007 e 2011. Para tanto, adotou-se a abordagem qualitativa, em uma pesquisa do tipo estudo de caso, recorrendo à pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevista semiestruturadas como instrumentos para a obtenção dos dados junto aos seguintes sujeitos: diretor e coordenadora pedagógica do colégio. Os dados levantados foram tratados na perspectiva de análise de conteúdo, com vista a atender os objetivos específicos. Os resultados encontrados demonstraram que os fatores como mudança na direção, rotatividade professores entre outros estão relacionados ao baixo resultado do IDEB e na Prova Brasil. O aumento do IDEB e do resultado da Prova Brasil demonstram estar relacionado com o retono do antigo diretor.
