This study investigated autonomy of school in the following dimensions: administrative, educational, financial and cultural. It analyzed the existence, the lack, the obstacles and benefits of autonomy. The research was outlined at a qualitative approach, through a case study and it allowed us to collect, through the questionnaire, data that guided the discussion of this paper. The development of the research has shown that it takes a correlation, through a democratic management, which focuses and emphasizes the participation of everyonel involved in school. Even though autonomy is provided by 9394/96 LDB - Directives and Basis of National Education Law, Articles 12, 13 and 14, it became clear that law does not change reality, concerning school autonomy. It can be seen more as a starting point for the school community so that they can reflect on their own conditions, challenges, goals and transform them. We need to find alternatives to school practices to show the importance of built, dialogued and conquered autonomy.
