This dissertation consists in an analysis of what was understood and many times still is as history in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, most especially out of the academic middle, as well as the relations between the historic knowledge produced and a specific social collective memory. For that, we carried out the study of five works by five different authors, through that we tried to make clear the forms of perceiving the history and making a historic work. We concentrated our interest in the period between the 1930 and 1980 decades and the regional contemplated space including the cities of Santa Maria, Cruz Alta and Palmeira das Missões. Our work had as objective to detect and to present the component elements of a peculiar way of thinking the history and writing a paper of this nature, as well as to locate the origin of these elements and the factors that permit to see the works analyzed works as components of a specific production situation. To be succeed in our objectives we made a systematic use of the comparative method, organized in two big axles, one centered in the elements of historiographyc nature and another turned to the question of the social collective memories and its relation with the analyzed historic knowledge. In the first, we searched for a rescue of the thinking and the making history in the Rio Grande do Sul since the XIX century, with prominence of the institutions that used to control the historic production during a long time - the Historic and Geographic Rio Grande do Sul s Institute and the Historic and Geographic Brazilian Institute. Next we presented the elements that make possible to perceive the existence of one other historic production situation, verified in the space and period already alluded. The books and their authors are object of specific considerations in the rest of the work, permitting that we come to demonstrate, in a concrete way, the existence of the situation production that we appointed, its characteristics and determinates factors, its context and social implications. With this paper we hope, in a late analysis, to incentive and contribute to a deeper and more systematic reflection about our own attitudes, about our own forms of perceiving and making history"
