Resumo: | Memory formation is divided in three moments: learning, consolidation and evocation and can be classified by its duration: short-term and long-term memory and its nature: explicit or implicit. The hippocampus and the amygdala are fundamental for memory formation. Noradrenaline is a neurotransmitter with important role in the memory formation that exert its effect through adrenergic receptors, α and β. There are three isoforms of β-adrenergic receptors: β1, β2 and β3, all expressed in the amygdala and hippocampus and they are involved in memory formation. Previous studies performed in mammal demonstrated important participation of β-adrenergic receptors in memory formation through pharmacological approaches, method that presents limitation due to poor agonists and antagonists specificity. The method of environmental enrichment (EE) can be used as a strategy to improve cognitive abilities. In the present study was evaluated the influence of environmental enrichment on memory of β3-adrenergic receptor knockout mice (ARβ3KO). Therefore, was standardized an 8-week EE protocol and through behavioral tests was evaluated short and long term declarative memory, as well as neuromotor dysfunction and anxious behavior, comparing ARβ3KO with FVB male mice at a young age and adulthood. The results showed that β3 adrenergic receptor (ARβ3) plays an important role in memory formation and the EE protocol used in this study in can reverse the memory deficits of ARβ3KO young mice. The ARβ3KO adult mice showed a worsening memory, both short and long-term memory, which indicates that aging and the absence of ARβ3 aggravate the memory deficits. Furthermore, the EE protocol was not effective to reverse memory impairments of ARβ3KO when applied in adulthood mice. |
