In Brazil, due to its geographic extension, as well as social and economic differences, the expansion of distance education involves several aspects of social inclusion, democratization, and personalized training. This brings several challenges, including management, having an environment to assess, understanding and measuring the critical factors of a distance learning course - such as its communication system, which is essential in this mode of teaching - in order to support actions of decision-makers and contribute to improving the quality of educational management. An evaluation of the Communication System of semi-attending and non-attending courses taught in Virtual Learning Environments is presented using a model (environment) of support for this evaluation, here proposed, based on the requirements observed in the document “Quality Benchmarks for Distance Superior Education”, developed by the Ministry of Education (MEC), and techniques of Business Intelligence. This model (environment) of evaluation searches in these quality references for the Critical Success Factors of the Communication System, as well as measurable and achievable metrics, and it comprises techniques of business intelligence that structure these metrics in dimensional models that are loaded by processes of extraction and transformation of the data coming from the operating bases of virtual learning environments and that, analyzed by analytical tools, creates flexible results, and visualizations. Two case studies are presented: the first exemplifies the proposed model and enables quantitative analyzes that characterize the Critical Success Factors of the Communication System of physically attended courses of a Brazilian public university. The second case uses the proposed model to analyze "Interactivity and Interaction" factors that influence the performance of beginner level students in online courses of a Brazilian private university, on which are applied statistical analyzes, neural network, self-organizing maps, decision trees and grouping techniques, aiming to describe the data, discover the relations, establish the most relevant variables and discover patterns that can support the conclusion.
