Resumo: This dissertation will investigate the affinities between the city and education encompassing its social territory and geopolitical characteristics, under the aegis of late twentieth century educational theories and philosophies and their outspread on a national scale and, in more detail, in the city of São Paulo. Based on the theoretical and philosophical-scholastic framework that considers education as an experience, proposed by John Dewey, as significance and intentionality according to Lev Vygotsky and David Ausubel, the present research seeks for the ties between the subject’s synthesis process in relation to the urban space. These ties will be observed in São Paulo, the world’s eighth largest metropolis, that owns – mainly from the 1990’s – peculiar characteristics allowing the analysis. In regard to São Paulo’s urban phenomenon observation, David Harvey and Henri Lefebvre dialog about the right to the city, Leonardo Benévolo’s description of the modern city strengthening and Josep Montagner’s ideas of use and the city’s political appropriation are taken as references. Therefore, inserted in the dialog among theory, effectiveness, and practice of an educational project in the proposed time-and-place snippet, this dissertation aims to answer in which aspects the narrowing ties between city and education could occur in a way to benefit and potentialize both of them. Revisiting the literature and the statistics data set, borrowing from the graphical references, carthographies and from the text diversity, and combining them in a way to qualify the reflection, is how it is intended to answer the rhetorical question exposed in the title. That being If this street was mine how could it be - as it faces the current ties between the city and education.

A partir do referencial teórico e filosófico educacional que considera a educação por experiência, proposta por John Dewey, com significância e intencionalidade segundo Lev Vygostsky e David Ausubel, a presente pesquisa busca a conexão entre o processo formacional do indivíduo em sua relação com o espaço urbano. Estas relações serão observadas em São Paulo, oitava maior metrópole do mundo, que possui características particulares fecundas à análise a partir da década de 1990. Quanto a observação do fenômeno urbano paulistano, toma-se como referência David Harvey em seu diálogo com Henri Lefebvre quanto ao direito à cidade, o urbanista e historiador Leonardo Benévolo em sua descrição da consolidação da cidade moderna e Josep Montaner quanto ao uso e apropriação política da cidade. Assim, no diálogo entre teoria, efetivação e prática do projeto educacional no recorte loco temporal proposto, a dissertação busca responder em quais aspectos o estreitamento da relação entre cidade e educação pode ocorrer de forma a beneficiar e potencializar ambos. Revisitando a bibliografia, o conjunto de dados estatísticos, apropriando-se das referências gráficas e cartográficas, e da diversidade de textos, conjugando-os de forma a qualificar a reflexão, intenciona-se responder à questão retórica exposta no título.
