This research aims to study two superheroes of American comics, Batman and Captain America, through a cultural, discursive and identity bias, starting from a brief retrospective about their origens (and publishers). As a research object the comic Marvel vs DC (issue nº3), 1996, was selected – in Brazil it was published as Marvel vs. DC: o Conflito do Século – which narrates a battle between the two superheroes. To analyze the reason of the bat’s victory over the patriot soldier by means of an online voting and paper ballot in the USA, it was chosen to study, in clippings, the American society between the decades of 1930 and 1990 in order to observe the superheroes' evolution in face of the social transformations that took place in the country (and in the world). It was in the 1930s that superhero comics were created to entertain the population that yearned for hope shortly after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 in New York. Years later, Batman and Captain America were launched with different purposes: one extolling an image of an individual capable of becoming a superhero with the persistence and intelligence to save his city; the other a patriotic soldier wearing the red-white-white flag to fight Nazism in World War II. Starting from the American Studies’ theory with Horwitz (2001), Winfried (2007; 2011), Baker (2004), and the Cultural Studies' theory with Hall (2001; 2006; 2015), Bauman (2005) and Silva (2014) it is intended to complement the dissertation with related issues regarding the identity of superheroes and the cultural influence of America.
