Diversity and Connectivity of polychaetes in different habitats of the Santos Basin deep waters

Resumo: | Recent advancements in deep-sea exploration are noteworthy, revealing a diversity of organisms inhabiting unique habitats. These advances are also notable in the Brazilian Continental margin, especially at the Santos Basin, the most prolific in oil and gas exploration. Deep-sea habitats found at the Santos Basin included carbonate mounds, pockmarks, exhumed salt diapirs and organic falls, the latter represented by whale bones and wood. Polychaete species dominate the fauna of these habitats in both diversity and abundance, with different species described in the last years. Still, few studies advanced in the connectivity and evolutionary history of annelids using molecular data, which is the main focus of the present dissertation. Different case studies from distinct species were analyzed, including an eyeless group of the genus Nereis (Nereididae) with three new species, which formed a monophyletic group. This clade includes a formerly known species from Brazilian deep waters, one species formerly described from China, and the tree new species, which distribution can be explained by water masses delimitation (Chapter 1). Two Siboglinum (Siboglinidae) species previously described from the Brazilian Continental margin, from which the type specimens were lost, have been redescribed based on newly collected material. Molecular data from Siboglinum besnardi was successfully extracted and results are reported in Chapter 2. Seven distinct Gymnonereidinae (Nereididae) species are reported from different habitats of the Santos Basin and organized as two cryptic complexes based on species delimitation and phylogenetic analyses. The Micronereides capensis cryptic complex includes three species and the Ceratocephale sp. 4 cryptic complex includes other four species. These reports, together with discussions on cryptic speciation are discussed in Chapter 3. The population genetics and connectivity of a widely distributed Aphelochaeta species (Cirratulidae), inhabiting various deep-sea habitats, were investigated using different molecular markers. The gene flow seems to be continuous without habitat delimitation (Chapter 4). A comprehensive dataset produced during this dissertation is made accessible through the ABYSSAL database, which structure and operation of the latter is explained in Chapter 5. Lastly, in the final remarks section, the findings are synthesized, including a general phylogeny and species, to serve as the basis for discussion. |

Esses avanços são também particularmente evidentes na margem continental brasileira, especialmente na Bacia de Santos, a mais prolífica em exploração de petróleo e gás do país. Habitats de águas profundas encontrados na Bacia de Santos incluem montes de carbonáticos, pockmarks, diápiros salinos exumados e quedas orgânicas, estas últimas representadas por ossos de baleia e madeira. Espécies de poliquetas dominam a fauna desses habitats tanto em diversidade quanto em abundância, com diferentes espécies descritas nos últimos anos. Ainda assim, poucos estudos avançaram na conectividade e história evolutiva de anelídeos utilizando dados moleculares, tornando-se o foco principal da presente dissertação, com diferentes estudos de caso de diversas espécies brevemente apresentados aqui. Um grupo do gênero Nereis (Nereididae) sem olhos foi revelado, incluindo três novas espécies para a ciência, todas posicionadas juntas em um clado resultante de análises filogenéticas. Este clado inclui uma espécie já descrita para águas profundas brasileiras, uma espécie originalmente descrita para a China e as três novas espécies, cuja distribuição pode ser explicada pela delimitação de massas de água. Esses resultados são relatados no Capítulo 1. Duas espécies do gênero Siboglinum (Siboglinidae) descritas para a margem continental brasileira, cujas séries-tipo foram perdidas, foram encontradas e redescritas. Dados moleculares de um espécime de Siboglinum besnardi foram obtidos com sucesso, permitindo análises filogenéticas, e esses resultados são relatados no Capítulo 2. Sete espécies diferentes pertencentes à subfamília Gymnonereidinae (Nereididae) foram relatadas em diferentes habitats da Bacia de Santos e organizadas em dois diferentes complexos crípticos de acordo com análises filogenéticas e de delimitação de espécies. O complexo críptico Micronereides capensis inclui três espécies e o complexo críptico Ceratocephale sp. 4 inclui as outras quatro espécies. Esses relatos, juntamente com discussões sobre especiação críptica foram relatados no Capítulo 3. Uma espécie bem distribuída de Aphelochaeta (Cirratulidae), com registros na maioria dos habitats de águas profundas, foi analisada em relação à sua genética populacional e conectividade utilizando diferentes marcadores moleculares. O fluxo gênico parece ser contínuo sem delimitação por habitat, conforme relatado no Capítulo 4. Todos os dados utilizados nesta dissertação estão depositados e disponíveis no banco de dados ABYSSAL, cuja estrutura e operação foram explicadas no Capítulo 5.
