Resumo: Acute Chagas disease (AChD) cases have not been systematically updated in the literature for, at least, the last 12 years. To perform an update of AChD cases, we proposed a systematic review and meta-analysis of AChD cases, using specific types of works published in the literature: i) case reports, ii) outbreaks, and iii) studies involving AChD patients because these type of papers, consistently, report consistent data about i) types of diagnostic methods to diagnose AChD patients, ii) signs and symptoms showed by those patients, iii) drugs involved in AChD treatment, and iv) demographical data of the affected population. After primary, secondary and tertiary screenings, tables and figures have been done to show the main finds, considering the scope of this review. The results showed that: i) parasitological methods are still the most common approaches to diagnose AChD, in the last 12 years, with emphasis on clinical and epidemiological approaches which played an important task in diagnosing AChD; ii) signs and symptoms seems to follow the previous literature findings, with fever, chagoma of inoculation, and acute myocarditis counting as the most commons signs and symptoms found; iii) Benzenidazole continue to be the most used drug to treat the disease, and, in some cases, the other drugs associated to AChD control also play an important basis in side effects of AChD, iv) when compared to vectorial transmission, where man were usually more affected (due to exposition to vector), oral transmission makes no difference in gender AChD infection. Finally, considering the scope of the present review, we can assume that AChD is still a burden. Furthermore, although treatments are effective in the acute phase of ChD, diagnostic methods displaying more specificity and sensitivity should support it. By that, new technologies can improve the detection of ChD in the acute phase.
