Resumo: How does the construction of meanings occur based on the vocal timbre of a popular singer? This question guided the research, which sought to deepen the study of the presence of sound and its meanings. Considering that the voice is a topic of interest in different areas such as Music, Health and Language, for the construction of this work, an interdisciplinary perspective was adopted with a qualitative approach through bibliographic and sound data. The analyses reflected the initial hypothesis that vocal timbre is subject to symbolic negotiations in several areas, with emphasis on the biological, psychological, social and, as it was concluded, technological. Initially, an integrative bibliographic review was carried out and then an investigation into harmonics and noise, supported by Wisnik (1989), which allowed the recognition of the complexity of vocal timbre and the need to ensure the clarity of its negotiations. Thus, the negotiators were separated into those internal and external to the body, developing an understanding of voice and technique, with the support of Behlau and Ziemer (1988), Behlau et al (2011; 2017), Hirano (1988), Sundberg (2022) and Salomão (2008), and of technology, society and culture, with Severiano (2008) and Tinhorão (1991). Auditory-perceptual evaluations and analyses of music from the beginning of the 20th century were carried out, which identified noise derived from recording technology as an element that permeates the technique and interpretative gestures of the popular singer. These findings led to perceptions related to meaning and presence, the basis of which was founded by Gumbrecht (2010) as a form of negotiation. Through texts by Rosi (2022) and Behlau and Ziemer (1987), it was observed that the interpretations attributed to the voice are subtly woven into the fabric of the dissertation and everyday communication through vocal readings and are emphasized by descriptions of the sound, bringing impressions from the listener and giving shape to sound aspects through verbal language. To complete the argument, more evaluations were made in contemporary popular music. The surveys proposed that the construction of meanings, based on the vocal timbre of the popular singer, occurs through symbolic negotiations that are permeated by subjective and contextual information, with the personal, technical, historical and technological moment being possible conditioning factors for the result of both the presence and the meaning of the sound.
