In this work, it’s intend to analyze the construction of the space of ocortiço in two works of the writer Aluísio Azevedo (1857 -1913): O Homem(1887) andO Cortiço(1890). The spatiality of both novels is developed by the author who created a kind of project in which he builds it and transforms it in a protagonist character. This space that appears in somenovels of the author is highlighted, especially in these two works, because it was in these texts that Azevedo formulated the construction of o cortiço as an influential factor for the development of narratives. In O Homem this space appears belatedly as an element that constitutes the secondary plane of the text, but already has distinct features from what would be projected in his later novel. In O Cortiço, this space has been influential since the beginning of the narrative, its influence is such that spatiality assumes a protagonist role for the plot, having power of action as well as a character.The possibility of this study is closely linked to authors who have already developed studies that contribute to the formulation of the research and can be invoked for a more effective work: Roberto Damatta (1985 -1986), Gilberto Freyre (1936), Gaston Bachelard ( 1957) and Oziris Filho (2007) will be listed for the understanding of spatiality issues; Antônio Candido (1973 -1975), Alfredo Bosi (1970) andAntônio Coutinho (2002) provide the necessary theoretical basis to understand the historical and stylistic context; Milton Marques (2000) and Jean-Yves Mérian (1988) studied the life and work of Aluísio Azevedo and are indispensable for understanding the author's literature.It is possible to conclude, by analyzing these texts, that Azevedo intended to build a microcosm that represented the society of the time, and the focus of his novel is to portray a nineteenth century Brazil in depth
