Resumo: In 2022, Museums incorporated the word sustainability into their official definition, proposed by the International Council of Museums. Operating in antagonistic environments, in which the increase in public attendance is confronted with a lack of resources of all kinds, these secular institutions coexist with the frequent challenge of maintaining the continuity of their activities. This Thesis deals with museums as institutions, whose relevance, perceived or not, is legitimized by the diversity of actors in their interaction environments. In these environments, they can apprehend resources that facilitate the implementation of contributive practices to bring the institution closer to sustainability processes and purposes. Bearing in mind the different forms that the notions of museum, institution and sustainability assume in the contemporary context, it was necessary to define particular perspectives in line with this study. The objective of the Thesis is to investigate the relationship between sustainability and museums within the scope of particular perspectives. In light of the museum institution’s historical path, the presence of factors characteristic of its nature that constituted its technical specialties was perceived, as well as symbolic values that legitimize the current museum as a relevant organization. By rescuing the notions of sustainability in the bibliographic review, relationships between activities, museum and institution were established. In line with the research object, and the researcher’s intention to contribute to problem solving, the complex problem handling method was selected. Through it, it was possible to analyze museums as an institution; to ascertain the links between the notions of museums, institution and sustainability; elaborate notions of de facto sustainability and de facto museums; and to present, through experience reports, sustainability practices in museums represented by the idealization of the implementation of the store space and the adoption of a public space at the Museum of Indigenous Art. The research results exposed ways of legitimizing, through experience reports, the processes and assumptions of sustainability in museums. It is concluded that it is up to museums to perceive and use the diversity of resources available in their interaction spaces and explore the plasticity and dynamism of other spaces, in order to act as museums in fact, and sustain themselves in their processes and purposes.
