Resumo: Chatter is a type of self-excited vibration that has long affected the manufacturing sector due to numerous undesirable consequences such as excessive vibration between the tool and the workpiece, high noise, poor surface finish quality, and deterioration of machine and tool life, reducing the reliability and safety of machining operations. Therefore, chatter has been a recurring theme in academic and industrial research, and numerous methods for its attenuation have been developed. In this work, a type of passive magnetic attenuator based on a dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) with Eddy Current Damper (ECD) was developed. The main design and assembly parameters of these attenuators were described, analyzed, and experimentally compared in relation to the chatter attenuation capacity during machining of thin-walled steel parts, with the aim of assisting in the design, manufacture, and application of this type of device. To this end, approximately thirty different attenuator configurations were manufactured, and FRF experimental analyses (Frequency Response Function) were performed on each of them, generating vibration receptance magnitude graphs to evaluate the correlation between the design and assembly parameters of these devices and their chatter reduction capacity. To validate the results, face milling operations, monitored by microphone, were performed on plates without the attenuator and on plates with attenuators, generating spectrogram graphs and FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) from the audio signal, in addition to visual analysis of the finish and roughness analysis of the machined parts. As a result, the attenuators provided a significant improvement in the visual aspect and finish of the plates and reductions between 56 and 63% in surface roughness levels. In addition, significant chatter reductions were observed in the spectrograms and FFTs generated for the plates milled with the attenuators.
