Jane Austen no polissistema literário brasileiro: a tradução de Lesley Castle e a recepção da obra Persuasão

This research conducted a descriptive study of the Jane Austen's Juvenilia and Persuasion works, with the objective of verifying the insertion and Jane Austen in the Brazilian literary polysystem, through the translations of her works published during the period from 1971 to 2019. To do so, we use Lawrence Venuti's (2002) theoretical contribution about literary translation, and the postulates of Itamar Even-Zohar (2013) and his Theory of Literary Polysystems, the studies of Gideon Toury (2012), about the Descriptive Studies of Translation. In addition, the work of José Lambert and Hendrik Van Gorp (2006) and their references analysis scheme, mainly in relation to the macro and microlevel aspects, as well as translation categories elaborated by Antoine Berman (2007), guide this work. The postulates of Andre Lefevere (2007) regarding discussions about translation politics and paratexts theory, proposed by Gérard Genette (2009), was used for the development of paratexts analyzes of the translations of the chosen works. That said, we find that there is only one incomplete translation into Brazilian Portuguese of the book Juvenilia, and eighteen editions, consisting of nine Brazilian translations of the book Persuasion. Thus, we find that works written in youth by Jane Austen tend to receive fewer translations in our literary polysystem than works written in her adulthood, as is the case with work Persuasion. In addition, we performed a translation of a soap opera in Juvenilia, entitled Lesley Castle, still unpublished in Brazilian Portuguese. We developed an analysis of our own translation process, in comparison with other translations made in the Portuguese/English language pair, in the Brazilian literary polysystem. Thus, the translations chosen were those of the translators, Julia Romeu who translated the Juvenilia, and Luiza Lobo, who was the first professional to translate the work Persuasion into Brazilian Portuguese, we analyzed the translations according to the concepts of foreignness of domestication approached by Lawrence Venuti (2002). We realize that the translation of Luiza Lobo's Persuasion (2007) has more foreign elements. In addition, the translation of Juvenilia, by Julia Romeu (2014), has more domesticating elements.
