The brazilian dependency, in the pharmaceutical industry,towards ' foreign capitaIs and interests is extremely high and incompatible with our market dimensions andinterests. On the other hand, it is pratically inexistent the basic sourvey produced here, be it by the national or, principally, foreign companies. Usually,it is said that this results from the legislation that does not recognize medicaments and respective processes patents. This work pursuits demonstrate that the basic cause of the technological and, consequently, economical dependency that exists in the industry does not have any significative relation with that legislation. On the contrary, the patent system may lead to a greater leveI of dependency for the developing countries. Moreover, it is evidenced that, althought Brazil is the most important country under the processes of dependent development, in the pharmaceutical industry we are still in a stage of total dependency, without any significative development, because the foreign capitaIs are brought here just to explore the local markets, without any intention of transferring know-how or equiping, technologically, the existing industrial basis. AlI these points, aproached under the concepts of the Imperialism Theory and the Dependent Development Theory, are studied concurrently with the historical evolution of the pharmaceutical industry in Brazil and with the determinant factorsI of the present situation of economical and theconological dependency
