A construção do conhecimento científico no campo de gestão de operações no Brasil: uma análise sob a ótica de redes sociais do período 1997-2008

The present research is based on the assumption that scientific knowledge is socially constructed, that interaction between the structure of researcher´s relationships and research practice reflects on scientific knowledge construction. Thus, its main purpose was to identify the relationship between scientific production in Operations Management Field and the dynamics of relationships between researchers. In this sense, it was developed a longitudinal study that examined articles published in the period between 1997 and 2008 in major Brazilian journals and academic conferences. Data analysis was divided into two stages. In the first, it was identified the field development in terms of published articles, as well as authors and institutions that published more in the field. Based on the Law of Lotka, field productivity was tested. Secondly, the relationships between the researchers were identified and Social Network Analysis was used to describe them. It was assumed that one relationship existed when at least two researchers published one article together. As results, it was identified the structural data network formed by researchers, as well as the data that indicates and measures researchers position in the network. It was found a strong growth of the field over the period analyzed in terms of authors and articles published and an increase of cooperation between researchers, supported by growth in the average number of links per author in the whole network. According to the parameters of the law of Lotka, the Operations Field in Brazil is very productive, because the vast majority of authors has a single article published throughout the period. Thus, the production of the field is stratified and concentrated in the hands of a few researchers and institutions. It was also identified that researchers have few relationships, giving the network a little dense and fragmented structure. Since 2005, it was evidenced a growth in the network development, not causing further fragmentation. Another contribution is the analysis relating the position of researchers in the network and their scientific production. It was found that the volume of direct links that one researcher has is more related to the volume of articles produced than its strategic position in the network. In summary, the present research revealed and described the dynamics of relationships between researchers and their scientific production in Operations Field with a purpose to bring subsidizes research activity in the field.
