As we observe the advancement of scientific and technological development, we perceive some scenarios that become considerably relevant to society as a whole, such as, for example, the creation of new devices linked to information and communication technology that contribute positively or negatively to social, political and economic transformations in the global context. In this sense, with the emergence and perspectives related to the Metaverse, a three-dimensional virtual environment that has been built by several organizations and researched by several areas of knowledge, we consider it relevant to understand how Information Science can contribute to this new scenario within cyberspace. With this, we seek to identify whether the Metaverse can be used as an infocommunication space for the development of scientific literacy, and, if this is indeed possible, what would be the guidelines for the construction of a Metaverse with this objective. Therefore, we believe that the Metaverse, even in its initial construction process, could become a reality in the near future, and that Universities can contribute to making this three-dimensional virtual environment an instrument for teaching, research and extension, just as we believe that it can be an instrument for communicating information, collaborating in the development of scientific literacy through scientific dissemination actions. The methodological procedures we followed involved a theoretical research model, with an exploratory and descriptive development, from the perspective of the qualitative method and documentary research. Through this, we visualized the current scenario of the Metaverse in the scientific field, which approaches are being related to the topic and what the possible contributions of Information Science are to this phenomenon. We thus identified that the Metaverse is an infocommunicational instrument and thus constructed the guidelines for the construction of a Metaverse for the development of scientific literacy.
