This dissertation examines the biblical commandment from Dt 25,4, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it is threshing”, analyzing its ethical principle regarding animal care and comparing it with contemporary legislation and practices in the state of Goiás, Brazil. The central research question concerns the dialogue between this ancient commandment and the reality of Goiás, a region characterized by a dualism between industrial cattle farming and a rich cultural tradition of respect for the ox. The hypothesis is that the ethical value of the biblical text, although partially reflected in contemporary animal welfare regulations, finds its most authentic expression in the affective memory and cultural practices that define the human-ox relationship in this state, serving as a counterpoint to the purely utilitarian logic of agribusiness. The overall objective is to analyze the convergences and dissonances between the biblical principle and practice in Goiás. Specific objectives include: examining the ethical foundations of Dt 25,4; examining animal welfare legislation in Goiás; and comparing biblical principles with current norms and practices. This methodology utilizes a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, combining bibliographic research, analysis of legal documents, and a case study based on oral history. The structure of the dissertation moves from an exegetical and hermeneutical analysis of the biblical text (Chapters I and II) to its contextualized application in Goiás (Chapter III), integrating theology, law, and culture to assess the resonance of ancient values in contemporary ethical challenges.
