Resumo: In recent decades, we have seen a growing interest in the theme of death and mourning in psychology studies. As the work expands, specificities emerge, such as studies focused on gender, since men and women tend to respond to social rules by taking on different roles in different situations in life, including in dealing with death. We currently have a lot of gender-related grief research. However, there is still a need for further investigations into male’s mourning for their wife's death. In addition to issues around gender, the theme of religion/spirituality has also drawn the attention of researchers and to address religion/spirituality, it is necessary to circumscribe the experience in the sociocultural context in which it takes place, given the diversity of the theme. From these aspects, this study aims to understand the relationship between experience with death and religious practices of men who practiced Roman Catholicism in Brazil, who became widowed. Considering historical, social and cultural aspects of the population, in which the religiosity of the Brazilian people is configured, we highlight the importance of developing an understanding of the experience of widowers in the face of their wife's death, relating the situation of loss to three of the funeral religious practices of Catholicism in Brazil: Ritual of the Anointing of the Sick, Ritual of Funerals and Mass for the deceased (Seventh Day Mass). Three are the specific objectives aimed at: a) Identify the meaning given by the participants to religious rituals; b) Analyze the effects of rituals in coping with the situation and c) Highlight the importance of social support offered by the religious community. The methodological procedures consider the selection of three participants according to the following criteria: heterosexual men, whose spouse had been lost within a period of more than one year and less than five years, up to the time of the interview; participants should identify themselves as members of a Catholic Parish and have attended at least one of the three funeral religious practices. Data collection took place through a semi-structured interview. The Informed Consent Form was presented and explained to the participants, according to a research project approved by the Ethics Committee of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. For analysis of the results, four categories were defined: a) personal situation of the participant; b) motivation for religious practices and identification of the meanings attributed to them: c) importance of rituals: e) importance of social support in carrying out rituals. The survey results show that positive meanings are attributed to Catholic religious practices. In the case of the Anointing of the Sick, the meaning can be frightening, if there is greater difficulty in accepting the announced death. Performing the rituals completes the care offered to the deceased, enabling them to resume life, with confidence that they are at peace. The social support offered by the religious community has great weight before and after death, giving importance to the deceased and also to the bereaved, including to avoid prolonged and intense isolation, with harmful consequences in the lives of the bereaved. The research is carried out with the financial support of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)Nas últimas décadas vimos crescer o interesse pelo tema da morte e do luto, nos estudos em psicologia.
