The study sought to answer the problem of a large private organization, with national operation where each federative unit has executive autonomy. It was considered a methodological procedure that uses bibliometric research, the bibliographic and documental reference of secondary data in the form of qualitative presentation, contemplating the stages of collection, selection, analysis and interpretation of the published studies. The use of bibliometric research methods and the analysis of citation networks and bibliographic coupling contributed to the selection process of scientific articles, which enriched the literature review and enabled the understanding of accumulated knowledge on the subject. 34 studies were selected for the theoretical framework. To assess organizational maturity in Knowledge Management (KM), the questionnaire model used by Batista (2012) was revised in order to obtain a terminological update, as well as to meet the characteristics of the organization. The self-assessment was carried out in the National and Regional Departments representing the five regions of the country. A Business Intelligence was developed to consolidate the results of the field research. The process of analysis and discussion took place in the seven dimensions of KM (Leadership, Processes, People, Technological Scenario, Knowledge Processes, Learning and Innovation and KM Results), in 24 states of the federation and the Federal District. The results show that the organization is classified in the introduction maturity level (expansion), that is, when KM practices are implemented in isolation in some departments of the institution. In general, there is support from senior management and the availability of financial resources and infrastructure. In this context, KM emerges as a strategy, requiring a series of multidisciplinary skills, as well as innovation and the use of technology to enhance the best organizational results. Then a feasible proposal for a plan for its implementation is presented, seeking to deal primarily with the main gaps assessed from a national point of view. With that, the strategic elements for KM (Vision, Mission, Governance Structure, Indicators and goals) were described and three projects were prioritized. The relevance of the topic was proven as the open economy market scenario, at highly competitive levels, imposes the need for effective business management, demanding the best from organizations in terms of quality, productivity, operational safety, sustainable development and responsibility Social. Without intending to exhaust the theme, but with the objective of giving visibility to the present value in KM, possibilities for new discussions and opportunities for future research are envisaged, especially with regard to the application of the steps “execute”, check” and “act”. presented in the Roadmap suggested in the final considerations of this study.
