Resumo: Considered an effective practice and of great importance, breastfeeding is recommended as the only food until six months of age due to its benefits. Also, it is responsible for assisting physical, mental and psychic development. The early weaning is when happens the interruption of breastfeeding occurs before the baby is six months old, regardless of the reason. During the first years of life, significant and rapid changes occur in baby’s life. In this context, the motor development is a sequential and continuous process, where an enormous amount of abilities is acquired and can be put at risk for several reasons, increasing the probability of neuropsychomotor deficits, but these are susceptible of prevention. The study aimed to evaluate the association between early weaning breastfeeding and motor development of babys at three months of age. A cross-sectional study was carried out, nested in an intervention study that accompanies the mothers from the gestation period until the third month of the baby’s life. Child development was assessed through the Bayley Scale of Infant Development (Bayley III). The other variables related to sociodemographic characteristics, to early weaning and their motive were investigated through a questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-Square test, ANOVA test and Linear Regression, and the latter was used to adjust for possible confounding factors. The prevalence of infants who stopped breastfeeding at three months of age was 16.4%. The reason for the most prevalent early weaning was "insufficient milk" (29.2%). In the bivariate analysis, breastfeeding was positively associated with schooling (p=0.022). Regarding motor scale, the highest mean, 102.8 (±13.0), was attributed to babys who were still breastfeeding. In the adjusted analysis, the variables socioeconomic class (p=0.0016), paid work (p=0.017) and maternal breastfeeding (p=0.0013) had a significant association with motor development. Thus, the findings of the present study indicate the relationship between motor development and breastfeeding, providing subsidies for the reinforcement and development of prevention and intervention strategies in this context.

Submitted by Cristiane Chim (cristiane.chim@ucpel.edu.br) on 2019-04-15T11:52:29Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Isabela Petry.pdf: 2172981 bytes, checksum: 24031511afb6bc8279f2b7698dd2eff6 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2019-04-15T11:52:29Z (GMT).
