The Dual Active Bridge Converter: A Study on SPS Modulation and a Current Stress Reduction Algorithm for DPS Modulation

Resumo: The Dual Active Bridge (DAB) is a DC-DC power converter which offers bidirectional power flow, galvanic isolation and natural soft-switching. Such characteristics are interesting for applications like electric vehicles, energy storage systems and DC distribution/transmission grids. In this Master’s thesis, an in-depth circuit analysis of the DAB converter employing its simplest modulation (Single Phase-Shift) is done, presenting steady-state waveforms, deriving equations of important parameters for converter design and explaining concepts like circulating power and soft-switching. A 600 W prototype is built for experimental validation of the mathematical model. Furthermore, an automatic algorithm for the Dual Phase-Shift modulation named mCSPT is proposed for reducing the current stress in the transformer and the power switches. The algorithm is validated by both simulation and experimental results.
