Resumo: The present dissertation objectivates to analyze some short stories, chronicles and novels from Machado de Assis (1839-1908) trying to highlight, among his critic analysis of the Brazilian society in the second half of the Nineteenth Century, the dialogues about the process of slavery abolition, crisis of the imperial regime and notes to the advent of the Republic. Structured in three chapters, it presents an exercise of analysis around the machadiana critic that was based in an important movement of edifying perceptions about the literary project of the author, from the clues and limitations of the precursors critics, in a continuous process of reviewing and noting. Following, it seeks in the hook of the machadian discourse/narrative/fiction historic dialogues interposed in a smooth way, in service of the writer’s critic position, to unveil representations and appraisements, that embark into the perspective of History and Literature (representations) and discourse analysis that allows us another look and tensioning of the literary critic.

Estruturada em três capítulos, apresenta um exercício de análise em torno da crítica machadiana que se pautou num importante movimento de edificar percepções sobre o projeto literário do escritor, a partir das pistas e limitações dos críticos precursores, num contínuo processo de revisão e apontamentos.
