Different studies have debated the relevance that cultural immersion through academic exchange has historically had and continues to have for the foreign policy and soft power of nation states. Commonly focused on the experience of universities abroad, the research shifts this debate to the field of basic education, by looking at the possibility of international schools to function as a resource that strengthens soft power, as they are institutions that adopt the language and educational program of the country of origin in foreign territory. In this sense, this dissertation is based on the following guiding questions: can an international school contribute to strengthening a country´s soft power? If so, how does this happen? The work considers the case of international schools, and its general objective is to identify how American Schools in Brazil strengthen the soft power of the United States. To answer this question, six international schools that receive assistance from the US government are analyzed, the American Schools in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Brasília and Porto Alegre. The research adopts a qualitative-quantitative methodology, of an exploratory nature, and consists of a bibliographical review and analysis of data and information gathered from the institutions' official networks and a questionnaire applied to former students. Based on the qualitative and statistical analysis of the data and the theoretical contributions of authors such as Joseph Nye, Pierre Bourdieu, Antonio Gramsci, Robert Cox and Samuel Guimarães, the American Schools can be recognized as institutions that carry and disseminate the culture and ideological values defended by the USA. In the course of the research, it was possible to identify that the American Schools in Brazil contribute to the soft power of the US state (political society) through ideological (shaping mind) and cultural direction, thus increasing the potential of the country's ruling class to achieve results favorable to national interests in world politics through 'attraction', 'persuasion' and 'institutions'.
