Considering the beginning of the activities of the Mission of Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Brazil in 1876, the founding of the Central Mission, then People's Central Institute in 1906, and the relations between American Methodist missionaries and members of society civil and political society from 1866 to 1915, the research aims to explain the development of this institution in the country and the work of the Institute in Rio de Janeiro, and to examine the movement of the actors involved, especially the missionary Hugh Clarence Tucker. For this purpose, the newspapers Methodista Catholico and Expositor Christão are analyzed. The reading of the Autobiography of Hugh Clarence Tucker, in conjunction with other sources, allows the survey of his trajectory and of the network of relations maintained by Methodist missionaries in Brazil. The Annual Reports of the People s Central Institute make it possible to know the missionary project, the actions and the expansion of the institution. Thus, the Mission of Methodist Episcopal Church, South, played an important role in the construction of the Brazilian Republic, while through its network of relationships it expanded and consolidated the missionary project in the country. On the other hand, the study of the life and actions of Hugh Clarence Tucker demonstrates his prominence in the actions of the Church, the importance of the Social Gospel, and the scope of actions aimed at the consolidation of American values in the republic. In Rio de Janeiro, the People s Central Institute acted in the moral sanitation of the port community, in line with the project of urban reforms of the beginning of the XX. In this sense, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, configures itself as a private apparatus of hegemony, with Hugh Clarence Tucker as the organic intellectual of the hegemonic project that he represents.
