This is a descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, whose object of study is the perceptions of obstetric nurses about interpersonal relationships with women in the care process. The following objectives were elaborated: to describe the process of caring for obstetric nurses from the perspective of H. Peplau; describe the roles played by midwives in their care process and discuss the interpersonal skills mobilized by midwives. Bardin's thematic/categorical content analysis was used for data processing. The research had as participants obstetrical nurses from the city of the State of Rio de Janeiro who work in the assistance to pregnant and parturient women. The results were grouped into two categories: “The phases and roles played by midwives in caring for women from the perspective of H. Peplau” and “The skills mobilized by midwives in interpersonal relationships with women”. The first category resulted in three subcategories, in which nurses identify women's needs and put into practice actions to satisfy these needs. By practicing these actions, the professionals develop two roles: teacher and leader. After that, they observe the protagonism and autonomy of women in relation to the care of the obstetric nurse. The second category presented the competences developed by midwives in interpersonal relationships, which are bonding, empathy, active listening and verbal and non-verbal communication. We conclude that midwives develop interpersonal relationships as a care instrument, through the skills and abilities (TNICEO) mobilized by them.
