Resumo: | In Antiquity the myth was inserted in the daily lives of the inhabitants of poleis and was used to provide living examples. The greeks ascribed to the gods the identification factor of their families. However, in Syracuse, at the beginning of the fifth century b. C., the ruling dynasty, called Deinomenid, minted coins with the nymph Arethusa s image. Nymphs are hierarchically lower divine beings than goddesses, therefore, we seek to the mythological significance of Arethusa nymph and the reason for choosing this image to represent the polis of Syracuse through coinages. For this, we analyse the political, social and religious aspects from the foundation of Syracuse, in the Archaic period, until the entrance of Deinomenid family to power, in the classical period, and the use of mythological narratives for them. The coins are our sources of information and, therefore, we analysed the function and use of these objects as devices of dissemination of ideas of greek governments, in this historical period, and the use of iconographic representations as political messages. |

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-06T23:57:04Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Paula de Jesus Moura Aranha.pdf: 5106583 bytes, checksum: 1a182efcf6789429bd9c38a283e612c0 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-06T23:57:04Z (GMT).
