The caregiver of the elderly is one person qualified to assist the elderly which has limited capacity to perform activities of daily living. Given the current demographic situation in the country, with the increase in the elderly population, increased demand is observed in this occupation for both home care and for care in long-stay institutions (ILPI). It is observed, however the need for greater knowledge of this occupation on the rise. This study has the general objective: To understand the daily lives of caregivers in the social reality of a ILPI. And the following objectives: Identify the elderly caregivers of insight into their daily practice; Describe the everyday practices of elderly caregivers in a ILPI; Analyze the interactions between caregivers, the elderly, their families and multidisciplinary team during everyday practices in a ILPI. For the study we used the ethnomethodological approach, exploratory. The study setting was a long-stay institution for the elderly in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted with 20 caregivers of elderly. Then the data were submitted to Bardin content analysis, emerging three categories: The caregiver of the elderly and their perception of the occupation; The caregiver of the elderly and their daily practice and; Interactions in ILPI. It concludes that understand the daily life of caregivers is essential for maintaining quality care for the elderly. Assimilate certain situations encountered in working practices and personal interactions of these caregivers enables nurses to identify key areas that need better systematization, preventive and educational approach in order to train everyone involved for healthy living, quality care and safe.
