Resumo: The purpose of this dissertation is to approach the press as a political instrument, verifying its capacity to act in the historical field. We start from the perspective that it is not only a reflection of society, but also an agent of events, interfering with how they will be observed by society. This approach is made through the analysis of the newspaper Tribuna da Imprensa and Última Hora during the second Getulio Vargas government (1951-1954). We take into account the context of the creation of these periodicals, verifying the aspirations of their founders towards them. Therefore, we make a brief study of Vargas's second government, identifying the main difficulties faced by him in that period. Considering the above issues, we analyzed the covers of the periodicals covered, referring to the month of August, 1954, when the difficulties increased for the president, especially after the Toneleros Street Attack, against the life of Carlos Lacerda. Through the comparison among their publications, we can see how the discourses and interests defended by these periodicals directly influenced the political course of the country, contributing to a troubled outcome, with the suicide of Vargas, on August 24, 1954.

Partimos da perspectiva de que ela não é apenas um reflexo da sociedade, mas agente dos acontecimentos, interferindo na forma como os mesmos serão observados pela sociedade. Essa abordagem é feita, através da análise da atuação dos jornais Tribuna da Imprensa e Última Hora durante o segundo governo de Getúlio Vargas (1951-1954). Levamos em consideração o contexto da criação destes periódicos, verificando as aspirações de seus fundadores para com eles. Junto a isso, fazemos um breve estudo sobre o segundo governo de Vargas, identificando as principais dificuldades enfrentadas por ele naquele período. Considerando as questões mencionadas, analisamos as capas dos periódicos abordados, referentes ao mês de agosto de 1954, período em que as dificuldades aumentaram para o presidente, principalmente após o Atentado da Rua Toneleros, contra a vida de Carlos Lacerda.
