Resumo: This is a research on the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival and its representation of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Part of the premise that film festivals are city experiences and communication phenomena. It seeks to identify in the institutional discourse of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival a city configuration, as its aesthetic discourse. The institutional discourse can be identified in the visual identity, the brand, the graphic arts, the film publicity, the prize, the texts of the catalogs and the interviews that are part of the corpus of this thesis. And the aesthetic discourse is identified in the films selected for sessions at the Première Brasil, main session of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. Methodologically we chose to create categories to interpret as representatives of cities present without the Festival's speech. City of scenery, glamor city, cinéfila city, past present city, sensual city, plural city, global city are some of the categories identified. An observatory of the institutional discourse of the Rio de Janeiro IFF with the official discourse of the city, which is not perceived when it comes to aesthetic discourse. The thesis seeks to dialogue with an emerging literature on international film festivals, highlighting authors such as Marijke De Valck and Julian Stringer

Parte da premissa de que os festivais de cinema são experiências de cidade e fenômenos de comunicação. Busca identificar no discurso institucional do Festival do Rio uma configuração de cidade, assim como no seu discurso estético. O discurso institucional pode ser identificado na identidade visual, na marca institucional, nas peças gráficas, nas vinhetas, nos troféus, nos textos dos catálogos e nas entrevistas realizadas, que integram o corpus desta tese. E o discurso estético é identificado nos filmes selecionados para as sessões da Première Brasil, principal sessão do Festival do Rio. Metodologicamente optamos pela criação de categorias para interpretar as representações de cidade presentes no discurso do Festival. Cidade cenário, cidade glamour, cidade cinéfila, cidade do passado-presente, cidade sensual, cidade plural, cidade global são algumas das categorias identificadas. A tese observa um entrelaçamento do discurso institucional do Festival do Rio com o discurso oficial da cidade, o que não percebemos quando se trata do discurso estético.
