Resumo: This paper examines the relationship between philosophical anthropology and the theory of freedom in the work of the philosopher John Stuart Mill. It is based on the basic idea that the practical philosophy of the English author has as its basic point a conception of human nature described in the terms of living beings that can develop indefinitely and harmoniously their potentialities. Such a conception of human nature underlies what might be termed a “broad” conception of freedom. Broad liberty contains within itself the two dimensions of freedom, namely: freedom understood in epistemological and metaphysical terms (subject preferentially addressed by metaethics); and freedom in the domains of morality and politics (a theme addressed by practical normative philosophy). I then present the two dimensions of freedom and their connections to Mill's philosophical anthropology.

Parte-se da ideia básica segundo a qual a filosofia prática do autor inglês tem como ponto basilar uma concepção de natureza humana descrita nos termos de viventes que podem desenvolver indefinida e harmoniosamente as suas potencialidades. Tal concepção de natureza humana fundamenta o que se poderia denominar uma concepção “ampla” de liberdade. A liberdade ampla encerra em si as duas dimensões da liberdade, a saber: a liberdade compreendida em termos epistemológicos e metafísicos (tema preferencialmente tratado pela metaética); e a liberdade nos domínios da moral e da política (tema abordado pela filosofia prática normativa).
